Whitehills: Saturday 23rd February 2008
The Flamstead End Golf Society returned to Whitehills in Dane End Herts for the 4th competition for the JP Classic Cup. Exactly a year ago Duncan Morris stormed to over 40 points to be the 2nd winner to take the JP trophy home, we returned to the course due to excellent condition in the winter months. The course was in superb condition and the greens were flat and true which is brilliant for this time of year. The day was cloudy and quite windy, 17 players were ready to compete. Present champion “Blakes” winner Matt Pemberton and Duncan Morris were amongst the 17, while there were debuts for Marc Harrington, Phil Amey and Paul Gifford. With our constant best scorers of Nic Coppola,Scot Major and Steve Reeves the field although the smallest was the strongest ever in terms of handicaps. A difficult first tee shot over a small pond and into the wind didn’t seem to be causing many problems for the opening groups. Shorey,Marc and Flinto all flew over. Tel and PG Tips followed, Sammy did after re-taking his tee shot after Moose shouted during his swipe at the ball. After the 1st hole the course seemed more sheltered from the elements. The first three holes saw great starts from Phil Amey who netted pars on holes 1 and 2 and went into the Nearest the Pin 4th hole with 8 points. Moose also had a good start being just one point behind with 7 points
The Par 3, 4th hole was Nearest the Pin 1 The opening group saw all good tee shots on the 148 yard down hill short hole. The wind was gusting but Flinto who’s only previous appearance was here last year stuck the ball about 8ft away. He knocked in to secure a birdie and take 4 points. 14 players followed but nobody could get any closer so the opening prize went to the 20 handicapper.
Current champ Matt Pemberton was not looking like being the first player to retain the cup by not scoring on three holes of the first nine going and going out in 16 points. Bogeys for Phil and Moose on the 9th saw them leading at the half way stage both with a brilliant 20 points. The wind was swirling and it seemed nearly all holes were into the wind, this would mean a score in the 30’s would win the day rather than a 40 plus score as on the previous two occasions. Nic Coppola who has scored in best in stroke play on all previous days had a poor first nine for his standards scoring just 13 and Duncan Morris who was also looking frustrated only taking 12 points out.
Hole 15 was the 2nd nearest the pin, just like the 4th ,the hole is down hill but with a bunker protecting the green and ten yards further (158 yards) than before Very consisitent with the irons Martin Flint planted his shot about 15 foot away. It was a target but looked as if someone would get inside this, however hitting the ball up into the wind to a flag on the right was proving difficult and although Moose was close but Flintos shot stayed closest and the prize was his. Not only the first player to win 2 nearest the pins but to also do it on the same day, well done Flinto son.
The uphill 18th hole was once again the longest drive hole. Big Dave Kenney took this last year going out in the first group, all longest drives and not seen the lead change much in the past, but this was different this year. Ian Shorey spanked one up there to put the marker in for the first group. PG tips with his square driver drove his up there and the ball bounced over Shoreys on the right hand side of the fairway to re-place the marker. Matt Pemberton in the third group put his a few feet behind this current marker but on the left, while Reevo flew at least 80 yards over but into the light rough where the fairway narrowed. Phil Amey in the 4th group then took the lead but it was the last group that took the this prize. Big Dave Kenney once again got his name on the marker but Scott Major who is always a favourite for the cup blasted his ball up the left handed to take the longest drive, his first prize on the tour. Big Guns Major.
Half way co-leader Phil, saw his inward nine not rack up the points he would of liked. 12 additional points saw his finish with 32 points on debut level with fellow rookie PG tips and Dave Kenney. Dunc’s round never got any better and 11 points in th 2nd half saw him finish with 23 points a surprise last place. Matt was unable to retain the trophy finishing with 33 points, level with Shorey and Reevo. Sammy went one better with 34 points finishing level with Nic Coppola who stormed back with 21 points on the back 9. Nic finished with a round of 85 once again the lowest score of the day, an impressive record considering he has done this on all four golf days. With a Hole-in-One under his belt Nic has taken every prize but the big one, many considering he cold be a “Monty” wiining titles but never to win a major. 3rd place went to Jamie Thomas. Probably performance of the day, Jamie averaged 22 points on the previous rounds but raised his game to record 35 points which included a storming back nine of 21 points, joint best with Nic. Flinto managed 20 points on the back nine to take second place with 36 points, but although taking the two nearest the pins he just fell short of cup sucess. Winner John Chrysostomous came home in 19 points to add to his 20 outward 9. Moose who has not been in great form is starting to get his game togther again. Hitting nearly every fairway and nailing some really long putts. With only 1 par it was his constant bogeys and not one blob out that took him to the JP Classic cup by three points.
$45 was raised for Macmillian Cancer.
Geek alert: Whitehills 2008 saw the highest average score being nearly two points better than any other day (32) points Only 4 birdies were netted during the day, a record low but also only 5 players went over 100, previous best being 11 at Blakes last year. 11 players got under the all important 100 mark, the same as here last year.
