Review
Sun shone again for the latest FEGS day. We travelled to Essex and Blakes golf club near North Weald. 19 players went off the first in varying styles. The course although fairly plain and open was in good condition with tees looking good and greens looking nice and fast.
The highlight of the day came early on the 5th hole a par 3. Nic playing in the second group cracked a HOLE IN ONE, first Ive witnessed. He was please to say the least. I thought the hole in one pot would grow and grow but Nic took home 55GBP , well deserved. Nic has reviewed is Hole in One on the Birdie Page (coming soon)
The signature 8th hole which is a 105 yard par 3 island green hole was our first nearest the pin. The pin was very close to the near edge, like many difficult flag positions on the day. It was also 50p for every ball in the water. I put away the Pro V and reached for the Ultra. Little 9 iron over, it just made it and fell 8-10ft away from the pin near the front edge. I missed the putt but this shot stayed the closest for the day.
Longest Drive was not until the 16th hole. Fairly straight hole but a narrow fairway with a bunker on the left hand side. I hit my best nearly 300yards, but well in the rough Reevo went 30 yards further but was also in the rough. Moose landed on the faiway about 230 yards to leave the marker. 2nd group Dunc (the drive) Morris spanked his well over 300 yards bang in the centre. Despite Major and Dave K coming close later on Dunc took his first longest drive.
Next hole (17th) was the 2nd nearest the pin. Reevo and Tel both got on the green, Tel slightly closer. However the Morris's were not finished, older brother Sam got slightly closer. Nic measured it out and Sam was just inside Tels shot. It was beatable but sams shot was best of the day.
Regarding the JP Classic Cup: The course was very open and the rough quite clear so it was harder then normal to lose your ball unless you found the many water hazards. Matt Pemberton opened with two three putts, but a birdie and 3 pars from the last 3 holes of the outward nine saw him pick up 22 points. Nic with his hole in one also came out with 22. Dave Kenney and also Sam Morris scored the same figure while current champion Dunc was 1 point behind on 21.
With the good weather a high score was going to win the day. Pannell came in with 17 points after only 6 on the first 9. Not bad considering his was nearly playing one handed. Dave Kenneys good start did not carry on in the second half, after 22 leading at the half way stage only 10 points were recorded on the 2nd 9. Dunc and Nic finished differently. Hole 18 saw Duncan finish with a birdie 4 scoring 4 points, while Nic finished with a 7. Both headed to the club house with 41 points.
However somehow Matt Pemberton scored 21 inward points, totally 43. A best ever round of 88 form somewhere. Not even a 7 insight. The Mexican hat was being waved in the clubhouse but it was just one of those days, everything went right. "I'm well glad I won the trophy, I went out there to score under 100 after only playing once in the last 8 months. However if i dont loose balls I normally do ok, and not one lost ball. Enjoyed the course, enjoyed the day, enjoyed the beef and Ale pie. I will be looking forward to defending the trophy but with a handicap cut I will struggle".
Well done to everyone for raising 103.50gbp for Charity.
